Absolutely one of my favorite addiction memoirs. Wurtzel is most well-known for writing Prozac Nation and, in all honesty, I hated that book. But not this one. After Prozac, Wurtzel was already working on her next book. To help her manage the depression that made her famous, she was prescribed Ritalin to help her focus on one thing at a time.
Not long after that, she’s flown from New York City to Florida and is writing Bitch and taking copious amounts of drugs. She starts digging holes in her legs with tweezers, all while snorting lines of powder. She is finally dragged out of Florida by her family, and friends, and dumped into a New England rehab.
The fact that she, like many addicts, relapsed almost immediately after being released from rehab will keep you wondering if she’s ever going to be able to achieve, and maintain, sobriety.
